National Weather Service Winter Weather Products

To advise you of hazardous winter weather, your National Weather Service will issue one of the following products:

  • Ice Storm Warnings are issued for ice accumulations of 1/4" or greater.

  • Blizzard Warnings are issued for sustained or frequent wind gusts of 35 mph or stronger and 1/4 mile visibility or less in falling and/or blowing snow for 3 hours or longer.

  • Winter Storm Warnings are issued for a combination of significant winter weather hazards (snow, blowing snow, ice) with at least one hazard meeting or exceeding warning criteria.
  • Freezing Rain or Freezing Drizzle Advisories are issued for minor ice accumulations under 1/4 inch.
  • Winter Weather Advisories are issued for a combination of advisory type winter hazards (snow, blowing snow, ice) with at least one hazard reaching but not exceeding advisory criteria.
  • Wind Chill Warnings are issued for wind chills colder than -35 with a wind speed of 10 mph or greater
  • Wind Chill Advisories are issued for wind chills of -20 to -35 with a wind speed of 10 mph or greater
  • Hazardous Weather Outlooks are issued to highlight the potential of hazardous weather including winter storms, severe storms and flooding.
