January Highlights:

(1) Persistent bouts of arctic air resulted in one of the coldest January's in many years across northern Michigan.   Average temperatures where several degrees below normal, with some locations observing one of their top ten coldest January's on record.

(2) Such cold temperatures resulted in a suppressed storm track, keeping the most widespread precipitation events off to our south.  Lake processes dominated, resulting in near to above normal precipitation in the traditional lake prone areas, while regions further south and east generally reported below normal precipitation.

(3) Lake effect snow was commonplace in the traditional snow belts, producing monthly snowfall totals several inches above normal across much of northwest lower Michigan.  Snowfall totals dropped rapidly to the east, a result of the suppressed storm track.
