Arctic Cold Spell - January 5-7, 2014

Overview Graphics & Photos Temperatures / Wind Chills

Overview

An extremely cold airmass dropped out of the Arctic region and across the nation's mid-section January 5-7, 2014.  In addition to the bitter cold, wind gusts were 25 to 45 mph behind the cold front that swept through on Sunday the 5th.  This combination generated wind chill values of -35 to -55 across the region for nearly a day and half.

It was the coldest stretch of weather since early February 1996.

While some daily records were set, this cold wave did not make the Top 10 for lowest wind chills or longest stretch of sub-zero readings.  Even so, here are some highlights:

  • Temperatures dropped below 0 on Sunday the  5th and started to climb above that mark 48 to 60 hours later.
  • Wind Chill Warnings were issued over 48 hours in advance AND covered ALL of Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin during the event.
  • Coldest wind chill values occurred during the morning of Monday the 6th.
  • All schools were closed on Monday and most remained closed on Tuesday the 7th.
