Severe Weather of July 27, 2009

During the afternoon of Monday,  July 27th, a low pressure system moved southeast through the area.  Party sunny skies ahead of this system allowed temperatures to climb into lower and mid 80s.  This allowed enough instability for thunderstorms to develop.  In addition, the low pressure system made  the winds aloft favorable for a few of these thunderstorms to become severe across the southern half of Wisconsin.  The primary severe weather reports were large hail and damaging winds.  In addition, there were a couple reports of possible tornadoes.

The map below shows the preliminary storm reports that the NWS-La Crosse received between 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM CDT on Monday, July 27th.  Hail reports are indicated by yellow the circles, wind reports are indicated by cyan circles, and confirmed tornadoes are indicated by red circles.

July 27th Preliminary Storm Reports from 2:00 PM through 6:30 PM CDT

Below is a radar movie from about 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM showing the storms during the period. You can also see the warning boxes (called "polygons") issued to the public by the National Weather Service (Tornado Warning: Pink, Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Yellow, and Flash Flood Warning: Green).  Most warnings were issued out ahead of the storms to provide time for people to prepare (this is called "lead time"). The NWS in La Crosse averaged 12 minutes of lead time to the public for the list of storm reports at the end of this story.

One tornado path was confirmed by a NWS survey team. It covered about a 4 mile length in northern Crawford County, WI, from one mile east of Fairview to five miles west of Soldiers Grove. The tornado knocked down numerous trees, hit a few power lines, and destroyed or damaged a few barns and outbuildings along its short path. While most of the damage was EF0 (relatively weak), one farm had quite a bit of EF1 damage that included a damaged LP tank. Based on interviews and calls to Crawford County dispatch, the tornado hit around 5:16 p.m. and continued for approx. 10 minutes as it traveled northeast.  Here is a photo taken of the tornado by Deputy Doug Olson of the Crawford County Sheriff's Dept., along with a Doppler radar view at the same time.
