Tornadoes of June 7, 2008

The NWS has confirmed, in partnership with spotters and law enforcement, 7 tornadoes from Saturday, June 7th 2008.

  • The first tornado occurred at 5:45 p.m. CDT in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, near Barre Mills and it was surveyed by a National Weather Service meteorologist on Sunday, June 8th.  The tornado initially touched down just west Russian Coulee Road approximately two miles east of Barre Mills (La Crosse County).  There the tornado destroyed one metal barn and partially unroofed another.  Much of the debris from the first barn was thrown to the north; however, some of its debris was scattered to the east for nearly a half mile up a hill.  A family of five heard the tornado and they took cover in a basement.  Fortunately no one was injured.  By coincidence, the father lived in Barnevald and both parents lived Wautoma when both of those cities were hit by tornadoes.

The tornado then proceeded over the hill and then moved through yet another farmstead.  There the tornado destroyed yet another barn and unroofed much of the adjacent house.  Both soft and hardwood trees were either snapped or uprooted.  An elderly couple was in the house when the tornado hit and they were not injured.

The tornado then moved through several wooded areas as it crossed County Road II, Antony Road, County Road II again, and then crossed Highway 162 South near Souchek Road.  It was here that the tornado dissipated.

The path of this tornado was 5.5 miles long with an average width of 600 feet.  It has been assigned an EF1 rating (estimated wind speeds of 90 to 110 mph).  Several nearby neighbors saw the tornado as it moved through both farmsteads.

In addition to the tornadic damage, there was sporadic straight line wind damage from County Road M in Barre Mills east northeast to Highway 162.  This damage was approximately a half mile south of the tornado damage (probably associated with the rear flank downdraft).  These straight line winds blew out the windows on west and north side of one house (approximately one mile south of Barre Mills on County Road M).  They also caused some trees to become uprooted.  These straight line winds were estimated to be in the 50 to 70 mph range.
  • A second tornado apparently touched down about 1 mile or two south of Liberty Pole, WI in rural Vernon County.  This tornado hit a machine shed and tossed machinery into the air in addition to hitting nearby trees.  It will be rated an EF0.
  • Another tornado touched down in Grant County across the Wisconsin River from Wauzeka, Wisconsin. The tornado touch down was brief, as witnessed by a Grant County sheriff, and in a fairly remote area of Wisconsin DNR managed land. The touch down was about 1.8 miles south of Wauzeka in northern Grant County at 1:52 pm. The tornado will be recorded as an EF0 intensity  (65 to 85 mph winds). This supercell thunderstorm continued to produce funnels on its track east along the Wisconsin River through Boscobel and Muscoda. No additional tornadoes have been confirmed however.
  • A fourth tornado was confirmed to briefly touch down in northwest Houston County just south of the Winona-Houston County line at 450 pm on Saturday. The tornado was seen by a resident and confirmed by law enforcement in the area. No damage was reported with this EF0 tornado (65 to 85 mph winds).
  • A fifth tornado was confirmed by law enforcement and spotters in Staceyville, Iowa between 445 pm and 450 pm on Saturday. The tornado was on the ground briefly and no damage was found and therefore was rated an EF0. The police chief in Staceyville was able to photograph the tornado about 2-3 miles northwest of the town just within the Iowa border.
  • A sixth tornado, and perhaps the first one of the day, hit rural southeast Adams County, Wisconsin and crossed into Marquette County, WI about 2.5 miles north of Briggsville.  Time is approx. about 157 p.m. and will likely be rated an EF0, although EF1 damage was reported in Marquette County from the same tornado.
  • A seventh tornado touched down near the Mitchell and Worth County line in northern Iowa around 5:28 p.m. but no damage was reported.
