10. JULY 9 NORWALK TORNADO - MONROE COUNTY WISCONSIN 

A TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN ABOUT 2 MILES SOUTHEAST OF NORWALK WISCONSIN IN MONROE COUNTY AROUND 4AM ON JULY 9TH. IT DEMOLISHED A LARGE MACHINE SHED...A LARGE BARN...SEVERAL SHEDS AND DAMAGED A NEARBY HOUSE. THERE WERE NO DEATHS OR INJURIES. THE TORNADO WAS RATED A F1 AND ONLY TRACKED A MILE BEFORE LIFTING. 9. MILD WINTER / SPRING 

UNDER THE REMAINING INFLUENCE OF LA NINA...TEMPERATURES DURING THE MONTHS OF JANUARY...FEBRUARY AND MARCH ALL FINISHED WELL ABOVE NORMAL. RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURES WERE SET IN ROCHESTER AND LA CROSSE FOR 5 DAYS IN A ROW FROM MARCH 4TH THROUGH THE 8TH. ANY SNOW ON THE GROUND HAD COMPLETELY MELTED FOR THE SEASON BY FEBRUARY 25TH.

8. WET SUMMER FOR ROCHESTER MINNESOTA  

ROCHESTER HAD 12.52 INCHES OF RAIN DURING THE MONTH OF JUNE ALONE. THIS NOT ONLY BROKE THE MONTHLY RAINFALL RECORD FOR JUNE...BUT ALSO BROKE THE RECORD FOR ANY MONTH. WITH MORE HEAVY RAIN IN JULY AND AUGUST...THIS PROVED TO BE THE WETTEST SUMMER EVER TOTALING 23.33 INCHES. IT EVEN APPEARS THAT THIS WILL BE THE 3RD WETTEST YEAR EVER ON RECORD.

7. MAY 12TH HAILSTORM 

AN ISOLATED BUT INTENSE THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPED OVER SOUTHWEST WISCONSIN DURING THE EARLY MORNING HOURS ON MAY 12TH. IT DROPPED GOLF BALL SIZE HAIL IN DE SOTO /VERNON COUNTY/ AND BASEBALL SIZE HAIL IN PARTS OF RICHLAND COUNTY. THE STORM CONTINUED TO TRACK NORTHEAST INTO CENTRAL WISCONSIN...AND PUSHED ACROSS THE ENTIRE STATE PRODUCING WIDESPREAD HAIL DAMAGE AND 1 TORNADO. THIS ONE STORM ENDED UP BEING THE COSTLIEST HAILSTORM EVER IN WISCONSIN.

6. SEPTEMBER 1ST WIND DAMAGE - ADAMS COUNTY WISCONSIN 

WINDS ESTIMATED AT 75 MPH COMPLETELY DESTROYED ONE MOBILE HOME... WHILE FLIPPING ANOTHER ON ITS TOP SOUTH OF THE ADAMS/FRIENDSHIP AREA IN CENTRAL ADAMS COUNTY WISCONSIN. TWO SMALL CHILDREN AND AN ELDERLY WOMAN SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. THERE WERE NUMEROUS LARGE TREES BLOWN DOWN NEARBY AND WEST OF HIGHWAY 13.

5. MAY 17TH HAILSTORMS - GRANT COUNTY WISCONSIN 

SIMILAR TO MAY 12TH...HAILSTORMS PELTED PARTS OF SOUTHWEST WISCONSIN. HARDEST HIT WAS GRANT COUNTY WHEN NUMEROUS THUNDERSTORMS DROPPED HAIL UP TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER. LANCASTER WAS HIT BY GOLF BALL SIZE HAIL PRODUCING WIDESPREAD ROOF AND AUTOMOBILE DAMAGE. DAMAGE ESTIMATES EXCEEDED HALF A MILLION DOLLARS.

4. JULY 10-11 HEAVY RAIN AND FLOODING  

THUNDERSTORMS DROPPED WIDESPREAD 3 TO 4 INCH RAINFALL ACROSS MUCH OF NORTHEAST IOWA...SOUTHEAST MINNESOTA AND PARTS OF WESTERN WISCONSIN. HARDEST HIT WAS THE CEDAR AND ROOT RIVER BASINS IN SOUTHEAST MINNESOTA. AFTER AUSTIN RECEIVED NEARLY 7 INCHES OF RAIN...THE CEDAR RIVER REACHED UNPRECEDENTED LEVELS CRESTING AT A RECORD 23.4 FEET ON JULY 11TH...8.5 FEET ABOVE FLOOD STAGE. INTERSTATE 90 AND SEVERAL OTHER ROADS WERE CLOSED DUE TO HIGH WATER. NUMEROUS HOMES AND BUSINESSES WERE DAMAGED BY FLOOD WATERS.

3. JUNE 1ST SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORM - MONROE AND JUNEAU COUNTIES 

A LARGE AND INTENSE THUNDERSTORM TRACKED ACROSS SECTIONS OF MONROE AND JUNEAU COUNTIES DURING THE AFTERNOON OF JUNE 1ST. AFTER A NIGHT OF HEAVY RAIN AND FLOODING...THIS STORM DROPPED A SMALL TORNADO NEAR CATARACT IN MONROE COUNTY DAMAGING SEVERAL HOUSES AND NEARBY BARNS. THE TORNADO WAS RATED AN F1.

THE STORM CONTINUED TO TRACK DOWN INTERSTATE 94 AND BEGAN PRODUCING SOFTBALL SIZE HAIL NEAR OAKDALE. THERE WAS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO CARS... BUILDINGS...AND BUSINESSES. NUMEROUS VEHICLES ALONG THE INTERSTATE HAD THEIR WIND SHIELDS BROKEN OUT. AS THE STORM MOVED THROUGH THE CAMP DOUGLAS AREA IN JUNEAU COUNTY...HUNDREDS OF TREES WERE BLOWN DOWN BY ESTIMATED WIND GUSTS OVER 90 MPH.

FINALLY THE STORM PRODUCED ANOTHER TORNADO BETWEEN NEW LISBON AND MAUSTON REACHING F1 INTENSITY. SEVERAL BARNS AND HOMES WERE DAMAGED WITH SEVERAL MILLION DOLLARS IN ESTIMATED DAMAGE COSTS. THESE TWO COUNTIES WERE DECLARED FEDERAL DISASTER AREAS.

2. DECEMBER COLD AND SNOW

THE LAST 3 WEEKS OF THE YEAR HAVE BEEN UNUSUALLY COLD AND SNOWY FOR THE REGION. DECEMBER 2000 WILL LIKELY GO DOWN AS THE SECOND COLDEST DECEMBER EVER FOR ROCHESTER MINNESOTA AND LA CROSSE WISCONSIN. THERE HAVE NOT BEEN MANY RECORD LOW TEMPERATURES SET...BUT AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF COLD WEATHER.

SO FAR IN DECEMBER...ROCHESTER HAS RECEIVED 33.7 INCHES OF SNOW. THIS HAS SET A NEW RECORD FOR THE MONTH AND WILL GO DOWN IN THE RECORD BOOKS AS THE SECOND SNOWIEST EVER. IN LA CROSSE...25.3 INCHES OF SNOW HAS FALLEN...THE 4TH HIGHEST AMOUNT OF SNOW EVER IN A DECEMBER.

1. MAY 31-JUNE 1 HEAVY RAIN AND FLOODING  

THREE SEPERATE WAVES OF THUNDERSTORMS HIT THE REGION STARTING THE EVENING OF MAY 31ST AND CONTINUED THROUGH THE MORNING OF JUNE 1ST. MANY AREAS SAW 3 TO 4 INCHES OF RAIN IN AN 8 HOUR PERIOD...ALTHOUGH ISOLATED AMOUNTS EXCEEDING 7 INCHES WERE ALSO WITNESSED. IN FACT... VICTORY WISCONSIN / VERNON COUNTY / RECORDED 7.25 INCHES OF RAIN IN 3 HOURS...BREAKING THE PREVIOUS THREE-HOUR RECORD IN THE STATE OF WISCONSIN.

FLASH FLOODING STARTED OVERNIGHT FROM SOUTHEAST MINNESOTA INTO SOUTHWEST WISCONSIN. SPRING VALLEY / FILLMORE COUNTY MINNESOTA / WAS ESPECIALLY HARD HIT WHEN 25 HOMES HAD TO BE EVACUATED FROM FLOOD WATERS. RESCUES WERE PERFORMED BY BOAT. IT WAS REPORTEDLY THE WORST FLOODING IN THAT COMMUNITY SINCE 1942. THERE WAS EXTENSIVE PROPERTY DAMAGE...CROP DAMAGE AND MANY ROADS WASHED OUT. ESTIMATED DAMAGE COSTS IN SOUTHEAST MINNESOTA ALONE TOPPED 5.5 MILLION DOLLARS. MUCH OF THE REGION ENDED UP BEING DECLARED A FEDERAL DISASTER AREA.

A RECORD CREST WAS RECORDED ON THE ROOT RIVER AT HOKAH MINNESOTA ON JUNE 2ND AT 52.2 FEET. THE HIGH WATER CAUSED MANY LEVEES TO FAIL. THE KICKAPOO RIVER IN SOUTHWEST WISCONSIN ALSO FLOODED LEADING TO EVACUATIONS IN SOLDIERS GROVE...GAYS MILLS AND STEUBEN. [more information]
