Turn Around, Don't Drown!

An average of 92 people are killed each year in the United States by flooding. Many of the deaths are preventable. A simple phrase can save your life: Turn Around, Don't Drown!

Never drive across a water covered roadway. Judging how deep the water actually is can be very difficult. Be especially cautious at night when it is even harder to judge the danger.

Water Can Float More Than Just Your Boat!

  • It only takes 6 inches of fast moving water to knock a person off their feet and 18-24 inches to float a vehicle, including an SUV or pickup truck.
  • Shown below is an example from Bismarck, ND from June 15, 2009, of a car becoming stalled after driving into a flooded intersection following heavy rain.
