|Newly Established Heat Advisory Criteria for WFO Birmingham
In coordination with the Alabama Department of Public Health, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham has revised the criteria for issuing heat-related products. The change was made to simplify the guidelines for issuing heat advisories and warnings. The revised criteria will continue to utilize the heat index, which is a combination of air temperature and humidity, but NWS forecasters can now issue heat-related products for abnormally high air temperatures, regardless of the humidity. Also, the revised criteria is uniformly applied to all counties across central Alabama, not different criteria for each major city.
Here is the revised criteria for central Alabama:
Heat Advisory - Heat Index greater than or equal to 105 or air temperature 100 to 105
Excessive Heat Warning - Heat Index greater than or equal to 110 or air temperature greater than 105
