Why are there two sets of climate records for Duluth?

The temperature and precipitation Airport records are from 1941 to the present, whereas the All-Time records are from 1870 to the present. The reason there are two sets of records is because originally the National Weather Service office was located downtown Duluth, close to Lake Superior. In 1940, the office was moved 6 miles up the hill near the Duluth Airport. Between 1941 and 1959, weather observations were taken at both locations. Due to the difference in elevation and proximity to the large lake, the two locations had slightly different climates, needing two sets of climate records. Since 1959, the official climate observations for Duluth have been taken at the National Weather Service office/Duluth International Airport.

Snowfall was not part of the daily climate as was temperature and liquid precipitation until 1875. Thus, the All-Time snowfall records are from 1875 to present, whereas the Airport snowfall records are from 1943 to present. The snowfall records also have an overlap from 1943-1959 where snowfall was measured at both locations.
