This storm was short-lived, but dropped 6.3 inches at the Duluth NWS office in just under 6 hours. The snow began just after midnight Friday morning the 16th and wrapped up around noon. This snowstorm was on a smaller scale than the previous day's storm and only affected locations near the head of Lake Superior, including the Twin Ports of Duluth-Superior. This heavy snowfall was due to a variety of factors. The terrain of the area including the basin of the lake and steep terrain on the North Shore as well as the ice-free waters of Lake Superior all played a part. There was also a boundary left over from the exiting low pressure that allowed for favorable winds and snow development, as well as sufficient lift for impressive snowfall rates of over 1 inch an hour.
