On this day in Iowa weather history...

1986: Severe thunderstorms moved from northeastern Nebraska into northwestern Iowa producing a strong tornado that tracked across Woodbury and Monona counties, passing 6 miles south of the Sioux City airport and striking the small town of Sloan before lifting. The tornado slammed into a coal burning plant near Sioux City and severely damaged several businesses and leveled a motel at Sloan, resulting in a total of 25 to 50 million dollars in damage. The storms also produced baseball sized hail between Sioux Rapids and Storm Lake then moving east southeast they accelerated and crossed the state in just four hours into the early morning hours of July 29th, producing severe straight-line winds all the way to Lee County before crossing into Illinois. Winds gusted to as high as 80 mph at Cherokee, Altoona, and Grinnell.
