Scott County 7 Inch Hail

September 27, 1959

On the evening of September 27th,  a storm moved through Scott County Iowa producing 7 inch hail.  This is the largest reported hail ever to hit Scott County.  The damage from the excessively large hail occurred in Davenport, Iowa.  Damage estimates of more than $5,000 were caused by the hail after it hit greenhouses in Davenport.  The heaviest damages occurred at the Louis Hendershot Florist where approximately 3,000 windows were broken.

There were no reports of injuries or fatalities with the hail.  That same day a F2 tornado touched down south of Davenport in McDonough County Illinois, causing one injury.
