Rotating Supercell over Iowa City, Iowa
Rotating Supercell over Iowa City, Iowa

Jim W. Lee took these pictures on May 18th, 1997.   The pictures show a rotating supercell over Iowa City taken from about 5 miles east of Iowa City, facing west.  It was taken between 6:45 and 6:50 PM.

Note that in especially the bottom picture, there appears to be a rain free base on the right side, just above the horizon. This corresponds to the location where Jim W. Lee encountered a wall cloud.

At that time, Iowa City was getting pummeled by 2.75" and bigger hail.  One of Jim's neighbors found a 3.5" stone.
