On January 8th, 1998 it snowed. The heaviest snow fell in a band from Stark County, IL to Rockford, IL. As you can see below in our County Warning Area, the heaviest snow fell in Henry, Bureau, and Putnam counties in IL.

The highest snow total reports we received from spotters are as follows:
  • Sheffield, IL 8.6 inches
  • Walnut, IL 9-11 inches
  • Kewanee, IL 8 inches
  • Mineral, IL 8 inches

January 8th, 1998 Weather Depiction

In this 1km satellite image, you can see the enhanced "bumpy" clouds from the northern suburbs of Chicago to central Illinois. This is where the heavier snow was falling at 1:00 PM CST, and it where the heaviest snow totals were for the entire storm.

The low you see depicted by the "L" had a central pressure of 995mb with observation reports indicating snow with "*"'s.
