January 3-4, 2004 Snow Storm

The seasons first significant snow storm moved through the region from about
midday on Saturday January 3rd through the afternoon of January 4th. The low pressure
system associated with the storm moved out of the southern plains, through the lower Ohio
river valley, spreading a swath of 6 or more inches of snow from south central Iowa into
east central Iowa and west central Illinois. The heaviest snow band, up to 11 inches, fell
just south of Interstate 80. This heavier snowfall occurred as the result of a narrow band
of snow that developed well ahead of the main system Saturday afternoon. Another narrow
swath of heavier snows fell over southern Delaware and Buchanan counties. After skies cleared
Monday, this narrow band of snow near Highway 20, was evident in the visible satellite imagery,
as a bright streak, embedded in the general snow field.
