...Below normal temperatures and above normal precipitation characterized the overall Kansas City weather in 2009...

The average temperature for the year was 53.8 degrees or 0.4 degrees below the normal of 54.2 degrees. This ranks as the 24th coldest year in the long term record (out of 121 years). Six months had below normal temperatures, with two months of near average, and four months of above average temperatures.

Lowest temperature: 6 degrees below zero on January 15th.

The warmest average daily temperature was 88 degrees on August 8th with a high of 97 degrees and a low of 79 degrees.

The coldest daily average temperature was 3 degrees on January 15th with a high of 12 degrees and a low of 6 degrees below zero.

The lowest afternoon high temperature was 12 degrees on January 15th.  

The highest overnight low temperature was 79 degrees on June 22nd and August 8th.

For the entire year, one record high and four record lows were equaled or exceeded. On February 7th, a record high of 69 degrees was set. On July 17th, a record low of 55 degrees was set. On July 18th, a record low of 56 degrees was set. On July 19th, a record low of 54 degrees was set. And on August 2nd, a record low of 57 degrees was tied.  

The total precipitation for the year was 44.95 inches, or 6.97 inches above normal. This was the 20th wettest year on the longer term record (out of 121 years). Four months had below normal precipitation, four months were above, and four months were near average. The longest stretch with no measurable precipitation was 15 days, from January 1st through January 15th.

The highest monthly total was 8.51 inches in August, or the 5th wettest August on record. The lowest monthly total was 0.05 inches recorded in January, or the 2nd driest January on record. 

The greatest rainfall in a 24 hour period was 3.38 inches on August 16th-17th.

There were four daily rainfall records exceeded on March 8th, April 26th, June 15th, and August 17th.

There were 56 days with thunderstorms, normal is 53.

The total snowfall for the 2008-2009 winter season was 14.6 inches, with the calendar year snowfall of 23.7 inches. Normal is 20.1 inches.

 The greatest monthly snow total in this calendar year was 15.1 inches in December. 

There was one daily snowfall record set on December 25th.

...Wind...

The average wind velocity for the year was 9.9 mph with the prevailing wind direction from the south, normal is 10.7 mph from the south. The highest wind gust for the year was 51 mph from the south on March 23rd.

 St Joseph:

...Below normal temperatures and near normal precipitation characterized the overall St Joseph weather in 2009...

The average temperature for the year was 51.9. degrees or 2.1 degrees below the normal of 54.0 degrees. This ranks as the 5th coldest year on record (out of 100 years, though it should be noted several years of missing data exist at St Joseph). Six months had below normal temperatures, with two months of near average, and four months of above average temperatures.

Highest temperature: 98 degrees on June 23rd.  

Lowest temperature: 8 degrees below zero on January 15th.

The warmest daily average temperature was 88 degrees on August 8th with a high of 96 degrees and a low of 79 degrees.

The coldest daily average temperature was 1 degree below zero on January 15th with a high of 10 degrees and a low of 8 degrees below zero.

The lowest afternoon high temperature was 10 degrees on January 15th.  

The highest overnight low temperature was 79 degrees on August 8th. 

For the entire year, five record highs and four record lows were exceeded. On July 17th, a record low of 53 degrees was set. On July 18th, a record low of 53 degrees was set. On July 19th, a record low of 54 degrees was set. And on August 2nd, a record low of 55 degrees was set. A record high of 71 degrees was recorded on January 31st. A recrod high of 67 degrees was set on February 6th. A record high of 68 degrees was set on February 7th. A record high of 82 degrees was set on March 5th. And a record high of 81 degrees was set on March 17th.

 ...Precipitation...

The total precipitation for the year was 37.20 inches, or 1.96 inches above normal. This was the 31st wettest year on record (though again, several years of missing data have skewed this ranking). Four months had below normal precipitation, four months were above average, and four months were near average. The longest stretch with no measurable precipitation was 24 days, from January 1st through January 24th. 

The highest monthly total was 5.83 inches in August. The lowest monthly total was 0.02 inches recorded in January. 

The greatest rainfall in a 24 hour period was 2.56 inches on April 26 and 27th.

Two daily rainfall records were exceeded. One on April 26th and one on October 22nd.

There were 64 days with thunderstorms.

The total snowfall for the 2008-2009 winter season was 12.0 inches, with the calendar year snowfall of 25.5.

The average wind velocity for the year was 8.3 mph with the prevailing wind direction from the south. The highest wind gust for the year was 54 mph from the south on March 23rd.
