Severe Weather Hits the Area - February 28, 2012

Severe weather raced across the lower Missouri River Valley region Tuesday night.  Much of Tuesday was filled with scattered showers and occasional thunderstorms thanks in part to warm moist air streaming northward ahead of a deepening upper level storm system.  However, as winds above the ground continued to increase, the atmosphere became much more unstable across western and central Kansas by late Tuesday afternoon.  As a cold front began to overtake a dry-line, more widespread thunderstorm activity erupted ahead of the fronts.  This activity quickly raced across eastern Kansas and Missouri during the late evening and overnight hours. Initially scattered in nature, due to the very strong winds above the ground, thunderstorms took on a linear appearance as they moved across Missouri.

Due to the unidirectional nature of the winds above the ground, strong and damaging winds were the primary hazard with these thunderstorms.  In fact, only a few hail reports were reported.  Locally, wind reports in the Kansas City metropolitian area averaged between 50 to 70 mph.  Additional severe weather was reported further north and east across the state, with damage near Weatherby Lake and further east towards Kirksville and Macon.
