Severe Storms Saturday May 21st and Sunday May 22nd 2011

 

Strong storms developed and hit a large portion of eastern Kansas, northwestern Missouri and central Missouri during the evening of Saturday May 21st and the late afternoon and evening of Sunday May 22nd. These strong storms produced numerous hail reports ranging from pea size hail to as large as baseball size hail. There were also seven reports of tornadoes and five reports of funnel clouds associated with these severe storms.

A tornado touched down at approximately 448 PM CDT near Norton, Missouri or 3 miles southwest of Slater, MO. The tornado was on the ground intermittently for approximately eight miles, lifting approximately 2 miles southeast of Gilliam, Missouri.  One home was destroyed and single wide mobile home was twisted and tossed about 50 yards on the south side of Slater.  Maximum intensity, EF-1 wiht a maximum estimated wind speed of 110 MPH.  The maximum width of the tornado was 50 yards with a total length of 8 miles.

A second tornado touched down initially around 325 PM, about 6 miles north northeast of higginsville.  Television media tracked this storm and captured the tornado touching down intermittently for approximately 6.5 miles before the tornado lifted at the western edge of Waverly.  A tree was blown into a home and a mobile home lost half of its roof on the western edge of Waverly.  This tornado was rated EF-0 with maximum wind speeds of 85 mph, a maximum width of 50 yards, and a total track length of 6.5 miles.
