...Hail and Heavy Rain Swamp the Lower Missouri River Valley...

A very warm and humid airmass combined with an upper level disturbance and a stalled warm front to produce nearly 18 hours of rain across portions of the lower Missouri River Valley on May 15, 2009.  Elevated showers and thunderstorms began early in the morning hours across northern Missouri and northeastern Kansas.  These thunderstorms became more widespread and gradually turned severe late in the morning hours of the 15th, as warmer air began to surge in behind a surface warm front stalled near the Highway 36 corridor.  Slow moving thunderstorms continued to sink southward through the daytime hours, producing copious rainfall rates greater than 2 inches per hour in some locations producing flash flooding.  To make matters worse, instability was high enough to produce marginally severe hail across much of the area with the largest hail (1.5 inches) reported in St. Joseph, Missouri.  Thunderstorms began to race southward and away from the Interstate 70 corridor after 7pm on the 15th as a cold front began to surge into the region from the northwest.  By 11pm, rain had completely exited central and northern Missouri as well as eastern Kansas.

Rainfall totals varied greatly with the heaviest corridor of rain falling in areas north of Interstate 70.  Rainfall totals were as high as 5 inches in some locations.  South of Interstate 70, rainfall totals were lower due to the more progressive nature of the thunderstorms in the evening.  Below are a series of maps detailing local radar estimates of precipitation over the previous 24 hour period.  In addition, you can view a plot of the local storm reports from this severe weather event.
