Interested in working with the NWS? Be a volunteer!

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill is accepting applications for our student volunteer program. This program allows a student to:

  • Learn daily NWS operations by working with NWS forecasters
  • Develop forecast skills by participating in the forecast process
  • Gain valuable professional experience and contacts for possible future NWS employment

Who may apply?

Students currently enrolled at least half time in an atmospheric science program (preferably entering your junior or senior year in the Fall of  2015 or enrolled in a graduate program). Spring 2015 graduates are not eligible unless you will be entering graduate school in the Fall of 2015.

When is the volunteer period?

Volunteers typically work between 80 and 120 hours over 2 to 3 months. This is usually, but not always, during the summer months.  Shifts are typically between 3 and 6 hours long.

Is this a paid position?

No.
