A large winter storm brought a mixture of rain, sleet, and snow across much of the Midwest Sunday night and Monday.  Wintry precipitation began across portions of northern Missouri during the early morning hours of Monday, however much of central and southern Missouri experienced light to even moderate rainfall.  Rainfall totals from the Kansas City metro through Sedalia approached four tenths of an inch.  Much heavier rainfall fell across southern Missouri with 1 to 3 inches of rainfall producing widespread flooding concerns.

As Monday progressed on, colder air started to sink southward into the region.  This colder air allowed rain to become mixed with sleet and snow over much of north central Missouri by the evening hours.  Precipitation gradually transitioned to all snow by the late evening hours, producing widespread snow accumulations over the region.

More precisely, snow accumulations ranging from 3 to 5 inches prevailed across much of eastern Kansas, northwestern Missouri, and north central Missouri.  The heaviest snowfall reported were received in areas near Fairfax, Gallatin and Brookfield where 6 inches of snow were common.  The largest snowfall amount was reported in Highland, KS where 6.5 inches had fallen. Lighter snow accumulations were reported south of Highway 50, with 1 to 3 inches of snow in many areas.  Additional accumulation totals can be found in our  latest local storm reports or in our temperature and precipitation roundup.
