February 24, 2011 Winter Storm

A potent, fast moving storm system passed directly through eastern Kansas and Missouri during the daytime and evening hours of February 24th. A wide variety of winter weather types was experienced over the region, ranging from snow and sleet to the north, to freezing rain and even enough moderate rainfall towards central Missouri to push some smaller streams into flood. The schematic below shows the atmospheric thermal profiles necessary to produce these differing weather types.

Winter Mix graphic

Every day, twice a day at 6 am CST and 6 pm CST, the Weather Forecast Office in Topeka, KS launches a weather balloon that samples temperatures, dewpoints, and winds through the atmosphere. Below are images taken during the early morning and late afternoon from these balloon launches. As noted on the graphics, during the early morning hours, a large section of the atmosphere above the ground was above freezing, while surface temperatures remained near freezing, creating the conditions ripe for freezing rain and sleet. By the afternoon hours, the storm system moving overhead cooled the entire atmospheric column, such that the entire profile fell below freezing, leading to bands of moderate to heavy snow. There was even thundersnow reported in Topeka with snowfall rates near 2 inches per hour.

 Topeka, KS Sounding - 6 pm 2/24/2011

The bands of moderate to heavy snow aligned near and north of Interstate 70 and the Missouri River late Thursday afternoon and evening, yielding snowfall totals in the 5-8 inch range. Slightly lesser amounts were reported in far northwest Missouri, with far less amounts from east central Kansas through central Missouri, where rain, freezing rain, and sleet were predominant during the day and dry air moved into this area during the evening. Snowfall totals from airport observations and cooperative observers can be seen below.

Seasonal Heavy Snows in Kansas City:

The 6.2 inches of snow reported at Kansas City International Airport set a record for the date (previous record was 3.8 inches in 1934), now marks the 4th calendar day this winter season with greater than 6 inches of snow. No previous winter season has ever had this many 6 inch calendar day snowfall events. Only 3 previous winter seasons in Kansas City (since 1889) have experienced 3 separate calendar days (not storm total snow) with 6 or more inches of snowfall. Interestingly, these other 3 seasons comprise the top 3 seasonal snowfall totals for Kansas City.
