Ice Storm Hits Northern Missouri
...December 18-19, 2008...

A powerful upper level storm system brought a combination of heavy sleet, snow, and ice to portions of the lower Missouri River Valley during the afternoon hours of the 18th of December, into the early morning hours of the 19th.  This storm system used the combination of a high amount of moisture and warm air surging into the region from the southwest along with very cold air which was left at the surface to cause widespread icing conditions across northern Missouri and northeast Kansas.  Ice accumulations generally north of a line from St. Joseph, MO to Macon, Mo ranged between 1/4 to 1/2 inch in most locations.  The highest ice totals were found in Unionville, MO and Maryville, MO where 3/4 to 1" of ice were common. Thankfully, no major power outages or tree damage was reported due to this storm system.

Further to the south, ice totals remained lower as cold air at the surface was shoved northward.  The image below represents a vertical cross section of the atmosphere streatching from Springfield, MO northward to Des Moines, IA at 9 pm on the 18th.  This cross section reveals the large volume of warm air which resided across northern Missouri allowing snow to melt as it fell through the layer and refreeze as it hit the cold, below freezing temperatures near the ground.  Further to the north near Des Moines, IA.  The depth of the cold air at the ground was thick enough to allow melted water to refreeze into sleet. In fact, as much as 3 to even 4 inches of sleet were reported in portions of Iowa!
