Wilkin County Tornado Damage
...EF4 TORNADO DAMAGE IN WILKIN COUNTY CONFIRMED...

ADDITIONAL SURVEYS BY NWS PERSONNEL HAVE DETERMINED THAT THE TORNADO
THAT OCCURRED NEAR DORAN IN WILKIN COUNTY MN ON AUGUST 7TH WAS A
LOW END EF4 WITH ESTIMATED PEAK WINDS OF 170 TO 175 MILES PER HOUR.
THE TOTAL PATH LENGTH WAS FIVE MILES AND MAXIMUM WIDTH AT 600
YARDS.

1. TYLER TO DORAN AREA DAMAGE IS CONFIRMED AS A LOW END EF4.
THE TORNADO RATED AS AN EF3 IN NORTH DAKOTA AFFECTED RURAL PORTIONS OF
EASTERN SUMMIT TOWNSHIP... IN RICHLAND COUNTY ND... INCREASING IN
INTENSITY TO A LOW END EF4 ACROSS WESTERN BRANDRUP TOWNSHIP IN WILKIN COUNTY
MN. THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN ROUGHLY 10 MILES SOUTH OF WAHPETON ND... NEAR
TYLER... AROUND 6:25 PM CDT. THE TORNADO TRACKED NORTHEASTWARD FOR ABOUT 5
MILES AND ENDED ROUGHLY 7 MILES SOUTH SOUTHEAST OF BRECKENRIDGE MN... OR
ABOUT 2 MILES SOUTHWEST OF DORAN... BY 6:47 PM CDT.

NEAR TYLER... IN RICHLAND COUNTY... 7 FARM BUILDINGS WERE TOTALLY
DESTROYED...WITH SIGNIFICANT TREE DAMAGE. EAST OF TYLER... IN WILKIN
COUNTY... 7 MORE FARM BUILDINGS WERE DESTROYED AND A NEARBY
SUGARBEET FIELD WAS HEAVILY SCARRED... WITH BEETS PULLED OUT OF THE
GROUND. A FORD PICKUP TRUCK WAS THROWN ONE HALF MILE INTO THE
FIELD... WITH THE ENGINE BLOCK THROWN NEARLY TWO THIRDS OF A MILE.
THE TORNADO WAS NEARLY ONE HALF MILE AT TIMES ALONG ITS ROUTE.

2. WENDELL TO EVANSVILLE TORNADO RATED AT EF1. THIS TORNADO HAD AN
INTERMITTENT DAMAGE PATH OF ROUGHLY 19 MILES FROM ABOUT 1 MILE
NORTH OF WENDELL TO NEAR EVANSVILLE. NUMEROUS TREES AND LARGE TREE
LIMBS WERE BROKEN DOWN ALONG THIS PATH. THIS TORNADO BEGAN AROUND
7:40 PM CDT AND ENDED AROUND 8:15 PM CDT. THE TORNADO WAS LIKELY
WRAPPED IN HEAVY RAIN AT TIMES.

The supercell that spawned the EF4 tornado in Wilkin County developed very quickly.  At 530 pm CDT, there was only a small echo on radar, and this storm became tornadic by 627 pm CDT.  Below are pictures of the wall cloud at 612-613 pm CDT along with the corresponding radar base reflectivity and base velocity imagery.  The next picture shows the actual tornado around 627 pm CDT along with the corresponding radar imagery.  (Credit Sean Lyon for photographs of wall cloud and tornado).
