Precipitation Comparison
2013 (through June 30) vs. 2012 (Total)

For some, 2012 was among the driest years on record. For others, the first half of 2013 (through June 30) has been among the wettest such period. In either case, a select few locations have already received more precipitation through the first half of 2013 than was received through all of 2012. Below is a map and corresponding table showing a comparison of precipitation totals for 2012 and the first half of 2013.

Stations highlighted in shades of green were either wetter thus far in 2013, or are less than an inch away from topping the 2012 precipitation total. The map shows well that these areas are generally concentrated from the lower James River and lower Big Sioux RIver basins in southeast South Dakota, into a narrower area of northwest Iowa. Much of this area received a large part of their 2013 rainfall during the significant rainfall/flooding event which took place just before the Memorial Day weekend. In contrast, locations from around Mitchell into the Highway 34 corridor are well behind their 2012 precipitation total (shaded in brown). In large part, this is due to a series of training storms which produced excessive rainfall and severe weather in the area on the night of May 5, 2012.

Please note that there may be other locations which have received more precipitation so far in 2013 than in all of 2012 which are not accounted for in this list. The locations included here are NWS cooperative observers and automated systems for which the data records accessed at the time of compilation were complete with no missing days. All measurements included here are preliminary and unofficial.
