Spencer, Iowa

Records based upon data from 1912-2006.  There was also missing data from 1916-1919, 1971, 1973, 1978, and 1982.

January 2006 was a record warm month for Spencer, Iowa.  Below is a graph showing the daily maximum and minimum temperature for Spencer.  Also shown is the normal high and low temperature for Spencer.  There were 14 days when the observed low temperature was warmer than the normal high temperature for the date.

Despite the very warm weather, no daily record highs were set in Spencer.  The warmest temperature of the month was 53 degrees on January 27.  

The average January temperature in Spencer was 29.4 degrees.  This set a record for the warmest average temperature in January and broke the old record by 0.6 degrees.  The graph below shows the top 10 warmest Januarys in Spencer.

Spencer also set a record for the warmest average minimum temperature in January.  The average minimum temperature was 22.3 degrees and broke the old record of 19.5 degrees set in 1933. January 2006 was 17.1 degrees above the normal low of 5.2 degrees in January.  The average low temperature for January 2006 was comparable to the normal low temperature for March 10.

Spencer also had the 5th warmest average maximum temperature in January.  The average maximum temperature was 36.5 degrees while the record for January is 39.8 degrees set in 1944.  An average temperature of 36.5 degrees is 12.5 degrees above normal and would be the normal high temperature on March 3.

There are several other interesting facts associated with January 2006.  This was the third January on record where the low temperature did not fall below zero.   Normally, there are 10 days in January when the low temperature is below zero.

January 2006 also had the fewest number of days with a daily minimum temperature of less than 10 degrees.  This broke the old record of 3 days set in 1933. Normally, Spencer has a minimum temperature less than 10 degrees on 17 days.

Spencer had the most days in recorded history when the low temperature remained above 19 degrees.  For 22 of the 31 days in January, the low temperature was at least 20 degrees.  This is 4 more days than in 1933 and 1942 when 18 days had a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.  Spencer normally has 6 days in January with a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.

Spencer also tied for the record for the 4th most days above freezing in January.   There were 22 days above freezing in January.  This is three fewer than the record 25 days above freezing which occurred in 1933 and 1990.  On average, there are 10 days in January when the temperature rises above freezing.
