January 2006 was the second warmest month on record for Academy, South Dakota.  Below is a graph showing the daily maximum and minimum temperature for Academy.  Also shown is the normal high and low temperature for Academy.  There were 7 days when the observed low temperature was warmer than the normal high temperature for the date.

The warmest temperature of the month was 64 degrees on January 27.  There were no record high temperatures set for the month despite being the second warmest January on record.  There were not any record high minimum temperature set either.  The warmest minimum temperature of the month was 35 degrees on January 26.

The average January temperature in Academy was 35.5 degrees.  This was the second warmest average temperature in January and was 1.1 degree colder than 1931.  The graph below shows the top 10 warmest Januarys in Academy.

Academy did set a record for the warmest average minimum temperature in January.  The average minimum temperature was 25.7 degrees and broke the old record of 25.1 degrees set in 1992. January 2006 was 19.4 degrees above the normal low of 6.3 degrees in January.  The average low temperature for January 2006 was comparable to the normal low temperature for March 28.

Academy had the third warmest average maximum temperature in January.  The average maximum temperature was 45.3 degrees which was 2.3 degrees cooler than the record of 47.6 degrees set in 1931.  An average temperature of 45.3 degrees is 17.0 degrees above normal and would be the normal high temperature on March 16.

There are several other interesting facts associated with January 2006.  This only the 2nd  January on record where the low temperature did not fall below zero.   Normally, there are 9 days in January when the low temperature is below zero.

January 2006 was the first January on record where the daily minimum temperature was not  less than 10 degrees.  This broke the old record of 1 days set in 1931. Normally, Academy has a minimum temperature less than 10 degrees on 15 days.

Academy had the second most days in recorded history when the low temperature remained above 19 degrees.  For 26 of the 31 days in January, the low temperature was at least 20 degrees.  This is 3 fewer days than in 1931 when 29 days had a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.  Academy normally has 8 days in January with a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.

Academy had the third most number of days above freezing in January.   There were 27 days above freezing in January.  This is one fewer than the record of 29 days set in 1931 and 1933.  On average, there are 8 days in January when the temperature rises above freezing.
