January 2006 was the third warmest month on record for Brookings, South Dakota.  Below is a graph showing the daily maximum and minimum temperature for Brookings.  Also shown is the normal high and low temperature for Academy.  There were 11 days when the observed low temperature was warmer than the normal high temperature for the date.

The warmest temperature of the month was 47 degrees on January 27 and 28.  There were no record high temperatures set for the month despite being the third warmest January on record.  There were not any record high minimum temperature set either.  The warmest minimum temperature of the month was 31 degrees on January 28 and 29.

The average January temperature in Brookings was 26.1 degrees.  This was the third warmest average temperature in January and was 1.1 degree colder than 1944.  The graph below shows the top 10 warmest Januarys in Brookings.

Brookings did set a record for the warmest average minimum temperature in January.  The average minimum temperature was 19.5 degrees and broke the old record of 15.6 degrees set in 1931. January 2006 was 19.2 degrees above the normal low of 0.3 degrees in January.  The average low temperature for January 2006 was comparable to the normal low temperature for March 14.

Brookings had the eighth warmest average maximum temperature in January.  The average maximum temperature was 32.7 degrees which was 7 degrees cooler than the record of 39.7 degrees set in 1944.  An average temperature of 32.7 degrees is 17.0 degrees above normal and would be the normal high temperature on February 27.

There are several other interesting facts associated with January 2006.  This the first  January on record where the low temperature did not fall below zero.   Normally, there are 14 days in January when the low temperature is below zero.

January 2006 set the record for the fewest number of days  where the daily minimum temperature was not  less than 10 degrees.  Only 2 days had a minimum temperature below 10 degrees in Brookings and this broke the old record of 7 days set in 1931. Normally, Brookings has a minimum temperature less than 10 degrees on 21 days.

Brookings had the second most days in recorded history when the low temperature remained above 19 degrees.  For 16 of the 31 days in January, the low temperature was at least 20 degrees.  This is 1 fewer day than in 1942 when 17 days had a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.  Brookings normally has 4 days in January with a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.

Unlike other sights across the area, Brookings did not even make the top 10 for the number of days above freezing in 2006.  There were 13 days above freezing in 2006 which 11 days fewer than the 24 days above freezing in 1944.  On average, there are 9 days in January when the temperature rises above freezing.
