Hydrologic Summary for April 2005 for the Area Served by the NWS Forecast Office at Sioux Falls, SD

Summary

April was a very warm month for the entire region, with most areas also being rather wet.

Flooding

There was minor river flooding on parts of the Little Sioux River in April. Please see the table at the bottom of this report for details on this. Also, there were 2 flash flood events in April. The first was in Turner County in SD and Clay County in IA on the 6th, and the second was in Clay and Union counties in SD, and Dakota County in NE on the 20th.

General Hydrologic Information

Temperatures in April were much above normal across the region. Average temperatures for the month were generally 4 to 7 degrees above the 30 year average.
 
Precipitation for the month was above normal for all of the region except for the northwestern areas. Precipitation totals were around 0.5 inch below normal (80% of normal) in that area, with the rest of the region reporting 0.5 to 1.5 inches above normal (125% to 175% of normal).
 
Soil Moisture conditions at the end of April were near normal across the entire region. The National Drought Monitor indicated near normal conditions across the entire region.
