Hydrologic Summary for July 2005 for the Area Served by the NWS Forecast Office at Sioux Falls, SD

Summary

July was yet another hot month for the entire region, but precipitation was below normal for the first time in several months.

Flooding

There was no river flooding in July. There were 2 flash flood events in July. The first was localized flash flooding in northeastern Minnehaha County on the 11th. The other was on the 25th, and affected Rock, Lyon, and Cottonwood counties in Minnesota.

General Hydrologic Information

Temperatures in July were above normal across the entire region. Average temperatures for the month were generally 1.5 to 3.0 degrees above the 30 year average.
 
Precipitation for the month was below normal for all of the region. Precipitation totals were 0.7 to 1.5 inches below normal (55% to 95% of normal). Southeast South Dakota and northeast Nebraska were the most below normal, with southwest Minnesota coming in closer to normal.
 
Soil Moisture conditions at the end of July were generally near normal across the entire region. The National Drought Monitor indicated near normal conditions for the northeastern half of the region, with abnormally dry conditions along the Missouri River and from the James River west.
