Summary
June was a hot and wet month for the entire region.
Flooding
There was minor river flooding on the parts of the James and Vermillion rivers in June. Please see the table at the bottom of this report for details on this. Also, there were 5 flash flood events in June. The first was across extreme southeast South Dakota into northwest Iowa on the 5th, extending from Bon Homme county to Lyon and Sioux. The next was localized urban flash flooding in Mitchell on the 10th. The third event was on the 14th, and affected Lake County SD, Lyon and Sioux counties in Iowa, and Nobles County MN. The fourth event was on the 20th and 21st, affecting most of southeast South Dakota and southwest Minnesota. The last event in June was on the 25th, affecting Cherokee, Plymouth, and Buena Vista counties in northwest Iowa. Fifty-seven flash flood warnings were issued in June, with 48 counties verified. There were a total of 55 flash flood reports received in June.
General Hydrologic Information
Temperatures in June were above normal across the entire region. Average temperatures for the month were generally 2.5 to 4.0 degrees above the 30 year average.Precipitation for the month was above normal for all of the region. Precipitation totals were 0.2 to 3.6 inches above normal (104% to 196% of normal). Southeast South Dakota and northeast Nebraska were the most above normal, with northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota coming in closer to normal.
Soil Moisture conditions at the end of June were 1 to 2 inches above normal across the entire region. The National Drought Monitor indicated near normal conditions across the entire region.
