General Hydrologic Information
Temperatures in March were near normal across the region, with most areas between 1 degree above and 1 degree below the 30 year average. Precipitation for the month was much below normal for most of the region, with the exception being portions of northwest Iowa and far southeastern South Dakota along the Missouri River, where near normal precipitation was reported. Most of the region received around ¼ inch of precipitation for the month, which is about 1.5 inches below normal. The areas along the Missouri River and into northwest Iowa received 1 to 2 inches of precipitation in March, which is near normal to ½ inch below normal.Soil Moisture conditions at the end of March were slightly below normal, with deficits of 1 to 2 inches. The ground had thawed as of the end of the month due to warming March temperatures. Most of the ice had cleared on area rivers, streams, and lakes. The drought indices as of the end of March showed normal conditions along the Nebraska/Iowa/South Dakota border region, with abnormally dry conditions for most of the rest of the region. Moderate drought conditions continued along and west of the James River in South Dakota.
