Sioux Falls, South Dakota

January 2006 was a record warm month for Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  Below is a graph showing the daily maximum and minimum temperature for Sioux Falls.  Also shown is the normal high and low temperature for Sioux Falls.  There were 13 days where the observed low temperature was warmer than the normal high temperature for the date.

The warmest temperature of the month was 57 degrees on January 26.  This ties for the 10th warmest day ever to occur in January temperature in Sioux Falls.  In addition, the low of 33 degrees on January 26 was the record warmest minimum temperature for the date and also tied for the 12th warmest minimum temperature ever recorded in January in Sioux Falls.

The average January temperature in Sioux Falls was 31.1 degrees.  This set a record for the warmest average temperature in January and broke the old record by 2.9 degrees.  The graph below shows the top 10 warmest Januarys in Sioux Falls.

Sioux Falls also set a record for the warmest average minimum temperature in January.  The average minimum temperature was 24.0 degrees and broke the old record of 18.5 degrees set in 1939. January 2006 was 21.1 degrees above the normal low of 2.9 degrees in January.  The average temperature for January 2006 was comparable to the normal low temperature for March 22.

Sioux Falls did not set a record for the warmest average maximum temperature in January.  Nonetheless, the average maximum temperature of 38.2 degrees was the 4th warmest ever recorded in January.  The record for January is 39.5 set in 1990.  An average temperature of 38.2 degrees is 13 degrees above normal and would be the normal temperature on March 2.

There are several other interesting facts associated with January 2006.  This was only the second January on record where the low temperature did not fall below zero.  The only other January when the low temperature did not reach zero was in 1990.  Normally, there are 11 days in January when the low temperature is below zero.

Similarly, this was the first January ever recorded when the daily minimum temperature was not less than 10 degrees.  Even in 1990, the minimum temperature fell below 10 degrees 3 times.  Normally, Sioux Falls has a minimum temperature of 10 degrees on 18 days.

Sioux Falls also saw the most days in recorded history when the low temperature remained above 19 degrees.  For 24 of the 31 days in January, the low temperature was at least 20 degrees.  This is 4 more than in 1939 when 20 days had a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.  Sioux Falls normally only has 6 days in January with a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.

Sioux Falls also saw the most number of days in January above freezing.  There were 25 days above freezing in January.  This is one more than the previous record of 24 set in 1990 and 1944.  On average, there are only 10 days in January when the temperature rises above freezing.
