Gregory, South Dakota

Records based upon data from 1909-2006.  Data missing from 1911-1930, 1939, and 1981.

January 2006 was a record warm month for Gregory, South Dakota.  Below is a graph showing the daily maximum and minimum temperature for Gregory.  Also shown is the normal high and low temperature for Gregory.  Unlike many locations across the region, there were no days when the observed low temperature was higher than the normal maximum temperature.

Three record high temperatures were set in Gregory in January.  The high of 68 degrees on January 15, the high of 56 on January 19, and the high of 59 on January 28.  Sixty-eight was also the warmest temperature of the month.

The average January temperature in Gregory was 35.0 degrees.  This set a record for the warmest average temperature in January and broke the old record by 1.8 degrees.  The graph below shows the top 10 warmest Januarys in Gregory.

Gregory also set a record for the warmest average minimum temperature in January.  The average minimum temperature was 23.6 degrees and broke the old record of 21.0 degrees set in 1992. January 2006 was 17.7 degrees above the normal low of 5.9 degrees in January.  The average low temperature for January 2006 was comparable to the normal low temperature for March 23.

Gregory also set the record for the warmest average maximum temperature in January.  The average maximum temperature was 46.5 degrees exceeding the previous record of 46.1 degrees set in 1990.  An average temperature of 46.5 degrees is 18.0 degrees above normal and would be the normal high temperature on March 16.

There are several other interesting facts associated with January 2006.  This was the 4th January on record where the low temperature did not fall below zero.   Normally, there are 10 days in January when the low temperature is below zero.

January 2006 was the first January on record where the daily minimum temperature was not  less than 10 degrees.  This broke the old record of 2 days set in 1992 and 1990. Normally, Gregory has a minimum temperature less than 10 degrees on 15 days.

Gregory had the most days in recorded history when the low temperature remained above 19 degrees.  For 23 of the 31 days in January, the low temperature was at least 20 degrees.  This is 4 more days than in 1942 and 1933 when 19 days had a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.  Gregory normally has 8 days in January with a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.

Gregory had the third most number of days above freezing in January.   There were 28 days above freezing in January.  This is one fewer than the record of 29 days set in 1990 and 1933.  On average, there are 16 days in January when the temperature rises above freezing.
