Huron, South Dakota

January 2006 was a record warm month for Huron, South Dakota.  Below is a graph showing the daily maximum and minimum temperature for Huron.  Also shown is the normal high and low temperature for Huron.  There were 13 days where the observed low temperature was warmer than the normal high temperature for the date.

The warmest temperature of the month was 58 degrees on January 26 which tied the record for the day.  Huron also had a low of 33 on January 26 which tied for the highest minimum temperature for the day.  This was also the 7th warmest minimum temperature in January.  In addition, the observed low of 32 on January 28th tied for the 20th warmest minimum temperature in January.

The average January temperature in Huron was 31.0 degrees.  This set a record for the warmest average temperature in January and broke the old record by 2.7 degrees.  The graph below shows the top 10 warmest Januarys in Huron.

Huron also set a record for the warmest average minimum temperature in January.  The average minimum temperature was 24.1 degrees and broke the old record of 17.4 degrees set in 1983. January 2006 was 20.6 degrees above the normal low of 3.5 degrees in January.  The average low temperature for January 2006 was comparable to the normal low temperature for March 20.

Huron also had the 4th warmest average maximum temperature in January.  The average maximum temperature was 37.9 degrees while the record for January is 40.4 degrees set in 1931.  An average temperature of 37.9 degrees is 13.1 degrees above normal and would be the normal high temperature on March 4.

There are several other interesting facts associated with January 2006.  This was the third January on record where the low temperature did not fall below zero.   Normally, there are 13 days in January when the low temperature is below zero.

January 2006 also had the fewest daily minimum temperatures which were less than 10 degrees.  There was only 1 day below 10 degrees in 2006 - in 1990 and 1933, there were 5 days in which the low temperature was colder than 10 degrees.  Normally, Huron has a minimum temperature less than 10 degrees on 20 days.

Huron had the most days in recorded history when the low temperature remained above 19 degrees.  For 26 of the 31 days in January, the low temperature was at least 20 degrees.  This is 5 more days than in 1919 when 21 days had a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.  Huron normally has 4 or 5 days in January with a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.

Huron also saw the most number of days in January above freezing.  There were 26 days above freezing in January.  This is one more than the previous record of 25 set in 1990.  On average, there are 10 days in January when the temperature rises above freezing.
