January 2006 was a record warm month for Marshall, Minnesota.  Below is a graph showing the daily maximum and minimum temperature for Marshall.  Also shown is the normal high and low temperature for Marshall.  There were 14 days when the observed low temperature was warmer than the normal high temperature for the date.

The warmest temperature of the month was 50 degrees on January 27.  There were no record high temperatures set for the month despite being the warmest January on record.  However, there was a record high minimum temperature set on January 28 when the low was 29 degrees.  In addition, the low of 30 on January 27 tied the record for the data

The average January temperature in Marshall was 28.6 degrees.  This set a record for the warmest average temperature in January and broke the old record by 0.5 degrees.  The graph below shows the top 10 warmest Januarys in Marshall.

Marshall also set a record for the warmest average minimum temperature in January.  The average minimum temperature was 22.4 degrees and broke the old record of 18.0 degrees set in 1992. January 2006 was 17.3 degrees above the normal low of 5.1 degrees in January.  The average low temperature for January 2006 was comparable to the normal low temperature for March 11.

Marshall also tied for the third warmest average maximum temperature in January.  The average maximum temperature was 34.8 degrees which was almost 4 degrees cooler than the record of 38.2 degrees set in 1990.  An average temperature of 34.8 degrees is 18.0 degrees above normal and would be the normal high temperature on February 27.

There are several other interesting facts associated with January 2006.  This only the 2nd time in January where the low temperature did not fall below zero.   Normally, there are 13 days in January when the low temperature is below zero.

January 2006 was the first January on record where the daily minimum temperature was not  less than 10 degrees.  This broke the old record of 5 days set in 1990. Normally, Marshall has a minimum temperature less than 10 degrees on 19 days.

Marshall had the most days in recorded history when the low temperature remained above 19 degrees.  For 20 of the 31 days in January, the low temperature was at least 20 degrees.  This is 2 more days than in 1942 when 19 days had a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.  Marshall normally has 5 days in January with a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.

Marshall had the fifth most number of days above freezing in January.   There were 19 days above freezing in January.  This is four fewer than the record of 23 days set in 1990 and 1944.  On average, there are 8 days in January when the temperature rises above freezing.
