Summary of Winter Storm
December 29-31, 2006

2006 ended on a wet note, as a strong and slow moving storm system produced a wide variety of winter weather across the area.  A mix of rain and snow moved into the area from eastern Nebraska during the afternoon of Friday, December 29th, expanding over much of southeast South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and southwest Minnesota Friday night.  By Saturday morning, areas along and west of the James River were mainly seeing snow, with a swath of freezing rain just east of the James River.  Areas of ice accumulations from 0.10 to as much as 0.40 inches were reported in areas from around Huron, to just east of Mitchell, to around Olivet and Tyndall.  The thickest ice accumulation was reported in parts of Bon Homme and western Hutchinson counties, where some tree branches and power lines were taken down by the weight of the ice.

Farther east toward the Interstate 29 corridor, and into southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa, the precipitation remained all rain through the day Saturday and into Saturday evening.  As Saturday night progressed, colder and drier air pushed into the area from the west, ending the snowfall across most of southeast South Dakota, while gradually changing the rain to snow as far east as Highway 60 in Minnesota and Iowa.  The transition to snow continued through the early morning hours Sunday, with a band of moderate to heavy snowfall setting up along and east of Highway 60 by midday.  In addition to the snow, increasing northwest winds created widespread blowing and drifting snow in these areas.  The band of snow exited the eastern portion of the NWS Sioux Falls forecast area early Sunday evening, moving across southern Minnesota and central Iowa as we rung in 2007.

A map of storm total snowfall reports, along with a summary of snowfall and ice reports as the event progressed, can be found below.

Storm Total Snowfall for December 29-31, 2006 across southeast South Dakota, extreme northeast Nebraska, northwest iowa, and southwest Minnesota.
