Sioux Center, Iowa

Records based upon data from 1900-2006.  Data missing from 1940-1953 and from 1956.

January 2006 was a record warm month for Sioux Center, Iowa.  Below is a graph showing the daily maximum and minimum temperature for Sioux Center.  Also shown is the normal high and low temperature for Sioux Center.  There were 10 days when the observed low temperature was warmer than the normal high temperature for the date.

Two record high temperatures were set in Sioux Center in January.  The high of 55 degrees on January 15 and the high of 50 on January 16 both set a record.  In addition, the high on January 11 of 51 tied the daily record.  The warmest temperature of the month was 56 on January 27. In addition, two record high minimum temperatures were set - 33 degrees on January 24 and 32 degrees on January 29.

The average January temperature in Sioux Center was 33.2 degrees.  This set a record for the warmest average temperature in January and broke the old record by 5 degrees.  The graph below shows the top 10 warmest Januarys in Sioux Center.

Sioux Center also set a record for the warmest average minimum temperature in January.  The average minimum temperature was 25.4 degrees and broke the old record of 19.1 degrees set in 1992. January 2006 was 18.6 degrees above the normal low of 6.8 degrees in January.  The average low temperature for January 2006 was comparable to the normal low temperature for March 15.

Sioux Center also set the record for the warmest average maximum temperature in January.  The average maximum temperature was 41.1 degrees exceeding the previous record of 39.8 degrees set in 1933.  An average temperature of 41.1 degrees is 13.8 degrees above normal and would be the normal high temperature on March 3.

There are several other interesting facts associated with January 2006.  This was the third January on record where the low temperature did not fall below zero.   Normally, there are 10 days in January when the low temperature is below zero.

January 2006 was the first January on record where the daily minimum temperature was not  less than 10 degrees.  This broke the old record of 5 days set in 1933 and 1939. Normally, Sioux Center has a minimum temperature less than 10 degrees on 17 days.

Sioux Center had the most days in recorded history when the low temperature remained above 19 degrees.  For 28 of the 31 days in January, the low temperature was at least 20 degrees.  This is 7 more days than in 1919 when 21 days had a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.  Sioux Center normally has 6 days in January with a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.

Sioux Center had the most number of days above freezing in January.   There were 28 days above freezing in January.  This is two more than the previous record of 26 days set in 2002 and 1992.  On average, there are 11 days in January when the temperature rises above freezing.
