January 2006 was a record warm month for Tyndall, South Dakota.  Below is a graph showing the daily maximum and minimum temperature for Tyndall.  Also shown is the normal high and low temperature for Tyndall.  There were 9 days when the observed low temperature was warmer than the normal high temperature for the date.

There was one record high temperature set in Tyndall in January.  The high of 63 degrees on January 16 set a record.  This also the warmest temperature of the day of the month.   The warmest low temperature of the month was 33 degrees on January 12.  This also tied the record high minimum temperature for the date.

The average January temperature in Tyndall was 34.3 degrees.  This set a record for the warmest average temperature in January and broke the old record by 2.4 degrees.  The graph below shows the top 10 warmest Januarys in Tyndall.

Tyndall also set a record for the warmest average minimum temperature in January.  The average minimum temperature was 25.4 degrees and broke the old record of 21.3 degrees set in 1990. January 2006 was 17.4 degrees above the normal low of 8.0 degrees in January.  The average low temperature for January 2006 was comparable to the normal low temperature for March 15.

In 2006, Tyndall had the 4th warmest average maximum temperature in January.  The average maximum temperature was 43.3 degrees which was 3.1 degree below the record of 46.4 degrees set in 1933.  An average temperature of 41.1 degrees is 15.6 degrees above normal and would be the normal high temperature on March 9.

There are several other interesting facts associated with January 2006.  This was the fourth January on record where the low temperature did not fall below zero.   Normally, there are 9 days in January when the low temperature is below zero.

January 2006 was the first January on record where the daily minimum temperature was not  less than 10 degrees.  This broke the old record of 3 days set in 1990, 1939 and 1933. Normally, Tyndall has a minimum temperature less than 10 degrees on 16 days.

Tyndall had the most days in recorded history when the low temperature remained above 19 degrees.  For 28 of the 31 days in January, the low temperature was at least 20 degrees.  This is 7 more days than in 1919 when 21 days had a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.  Tyndall normally has 8 days in January with a minimum temperature of at least 20 degrees.

Tyndall had the 4th most number of days above freezing in January.   There were 26 days above freezing in January.  This is three fewer than the record of 29 days set in 1990 and 1933.  On average, there are 14 days in January when the temperature rises above freezing.
