Preliminary data for June, July and August 2009 tell the "cool" story of temperatures for Grand Island, Hastings and Kearney. Though astronomically not the case, the period of June, July and August is often considered the meteorological summer period. This past summer was the coolest since 2004 for the Tri-Cities and one of the coolest summers on record. This summer was the 6th coolest on record for Kearney, the 7th coolest for Hastings and it tied for the 7th coolest at Grand Island. In all three cities, the coolest summer period on record was either 1992 or 1915.  In terms of 90 and 100 degree days, check out the recent "Not So Hot" article from the NWS Hastings, which summarizes that information. Of note, none of the Tri-Cities have reached 100 degrees this summer. Though somewhat unusual, such a fact is not unheard of. For the 3-year period of 1992 through 1994, Hastings was the only site to hit 100 degrees, and that only happened on one day.

The following tables summarize the coolest summer periods on record and give a brief look at some precipitation data for the Tri-Cities.
