As it turns out...2009...at least through the end of August...most of central and south central Nebraska...and north central Kansas will end up short on the number of 90 and 100 degree days climatology says we are owed.  Not that many are complaining...especially when the air conditioning bill comes in...the cooler summer is hampering the maturation of some crops...especially corn...and utility companies are noticing a decreased demand for electricity.

A large number of our Cooperative Weather Observation sites were more than 50 percent off from the average number of days with at or above 90 degree temperatures...and to find a 100 degree or warmer day you would have had to hang out along the southern border counties of Nebraska or in north central Kansas.  Looking back at previous years...the early 1990's come closest to resembling this years "chilly" trend.  While September averages anywhere between 5 to 10 days with 90 degree or warmer temperatures...it is doubtful the September final count will bring us closer to the average number of 90-plus degree days we normally experience.

The table below provides a rundown and comparison of 90 degree or warmer days.
