July 2009 was a cool one for the Tri-Cities, as average monthly temperatures ranged from 3.3 to 3.8 degrees below normal.  The cool monthly temperatures made the Top 10 for the Coolest July on record, at Grand Island, Hastings, and Kearney, NE.   The average monthly high temperature at Grand Island was 84.4 degrees, and the average monthly low was 60.6 degrees.  At Hastings, the average monthly high temperature was 83.6 degrees, and the average monthly low was 60.9 degrees.   The highest maximum temperature during the month occurred on July 24th when the high temperature for the day reached 98 degrees at Grand Island, 95 degrees in Hastings and 92 degrees at Kearney.  Precipitation during July was below normal.  Grand Island received 2.70 inches, which was 0.44 inch below normal.  At Hastings, 2.35 inches of rain fell, which was 1.46 inches below normal.

Cool, record setting temperatures were an underlying theme throughout the month.  Thunderstorms and severe weather also occurred, with the storms primarily producing large hail, damaging winds and locally heavy rainfall.  A funnel cloud in the Grand Island area was observed for many miles around on the 24th, but this funnel did not touch down as a tornado.
