May of 2009 featured above average monthly temperatures at Grand Island and Hastings, and below normal precpitation.  The average monthly high temperature at Grand Island was 62.4 degrees, which was 1.8 degrees above normal.  Hastings had an average montly temperature of 62.2 degrees, which was 0.7 degree above normal.  Precipitation at Grand Island totaled 2.05 inches, which was 2.02 inches below normal.  Hastings tallied 1.87 inches of rainfall, which was 2.72 inches below normal

The following is a summary of noteworthy weather events across south central Nebraska and north central Kansas during May:

  • May 15:  Morning thunderstorms produced hail from the size of pennies to the size of ping pong balls. Click here for information large hail. 
  • May 19-20th:  A tight pressure gradient across the Central Plains resulted in two days of strong and gusty southerly winds.  Click here for the wind speeds.
