...JANUARY 2006 THE WARMEST JANUARY ON RECORD...

JANUARY 2006 WILL GO DOWN AS THE WARMEST ON RECORD ACROSS SOUTH
CENTRAL NEBRASKA AND NORTH CENTRAL KANSAS. IN SOME CASES...THE
NUMBERS DEPICT THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH EXCEEDED
PREVIOUS RECORDS SET BACK IN THE DUST BOWL DAYS OF THE 1930S.

OBSERVATIONS FROM THE THREE AUTOMATED WEATHER STATIONS AT GRAND
ISLAND...HASTINGS...AND KEARNEY...CLEARLY SHOW THE UNSEASONABLE
WARMTH FOR THE MONTH. HERE ARE SOME PRELIMINARY NUMBERS:

GRAND ISLAND...

JANUARY 2006 AVERAGE TEMPERATURE: 38.4 DEGREES
NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE: 22.4 DEGREES
DEPARTURE FROM NORMAL:  16.0 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL
PREVIOUS JANUARY RECORD: 35.4 DEGREES IN 1936

HASTINGS...

JANUARY 2006 AVERAGE TEMPERATURE: 39.5 DEGREES
NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE: 23.6 DEGREES
DEPARTURE FROM NORMAL:  15.9 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL
PREVIOUS JANUARY RECORD: 34.1 IN 1936

KEARNEY...

JANUARY 2006 AVERAGE TEMPERATURE: 39.2 DEGREES
NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE: 22.4 DEGREES
DEPARTURE FROM NORMAL:  16.8 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL
PREVIOUS JANUARY RECORD: 35.1 IN 1986

COOPERATIVE WEATHER OBSERVING STATIONS /COOPS/ ACROSS THE REST OF
SOUTH CENTRAL NEBRASKA AND NORTH CENTRAL KANSAS WILL LIKELY SHOW
SIMILAR RECORD WARMTH...ONCE THOSE DAILY OBSERVATIONS ARE SUBMITTED
IN EARLY FEBRUARY.

JANUARY WAS ALSO VERY DRY ACROSS THE REGION. THERE WERE A COUPLE OF
RAIN EVENTS WHICH DROPPED A QUARTER TO ONE HALF INCH OF RAIN IN SOME
AREAS...BUT THE COVERAGE WAS SPOTTY. DESPITE THE DRY CONDITIONS OF
JANUARY 2006...THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL TIMES IN THE PAST DURING
WHICH NO OR VERY LITTLE MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION OCCURRED. EVEN
SO...MUCH OF THE REGION REMAINS IN ABNORMALLY DRY TO MODERATE
DROUGHT CONDITIONS ACCORDING TO THE U.S. DROUGHT MONITOR.
