As we ring in 2011, here is a look at some New Year's Day climatology for the area... The most detailed and reviewed records are for Grand Island, Nebraska. Data for Grand Island dates back to 1895. Toward the bottom of the page is New Year's Day record information for eleven other locations in south central Nebraska and north central Kansas. Of interest is that 1974 was the record coldest New Year's Day for most locations. In fact, Greeley, Nebraska dropped down to minus 25 degrees on January 1, 1974. One of the snowier New Year's Day was in 1948, while many of the warmest starts to the New Year occurred in either 1939 or 1997.
