The first half of December was pleasant temperature-wise...but winter set in about a week ahead of the winter solstice.  Averaging out the entire month...it was cold.  Average monthly temperatures were generally 3 to 7 degrees below normal...with the exception of Plainville which managed to finish a degree above normal for the month.  Many locations finished in the Top Ten bracket of coldest Decembers and for most of us...it was the coldest December of record in 8 years.  December 2008 turned out to be the 3rd coldest December of record for Greeley...the 4th for Phillipsburg...the 7th coldest for Superior...and the 8th coldest for both Kearney and Smith Center.

Precipitation for December varied with a lean toward below normal over much of our region.  The bulk of December's moisture fell around the 18th and 19th...when areas from around North Loup and Greeley received between 10 to 14 inches of snow.  For the month...Greeley's 14.1 inches of snow qualified December 2008 as the 6th snowiest December of record for Greeley since 1895.
