Thunderstorms erupted across south central Nebraska and north central Kansas on Wednesday afternoon and evening, July 22, 2009. Several of these storms did reach severe status with large hail to the size of golf balls and gusty thunderstorms winds in excess of 60 MPH being reported. Parts of the area also saw torrential rainfall, with some of the highest reported totals around 3 inches focusing across southeast sections of both Valley and Furnas counties.

Due to the scattered nature of the thunderstorms, rainfall totals across central and south central Nebraska and north central Kansas varied considerably over short distances. In general, the highest totals of around 3 inches or higher focusd across southeast sections of Valley and Furnas counties. Below are photos taken by a NWS Hastings storm survey team on Thursday, July 23rd, approximately 3 miles west-southwest of Odessa, NE. Several photos depict damage to a residence along Dunbar Road, where a garage was destroyed with debris scattered approximately 100-150 feet to the southeast. This was determined to be the result of intense straight-line winds of around 80 MPH or higher.
