Storm Reports (rain reports are down the page)

Severe thunderstorms rolled across much of south central Nebraska during the early morning hours of Tuesday, August 4, 2009, producing a swath of damaging winds ranging from 50 to over 70 MPH in many areas. This resulted in several reports of toppled trees and downed branches. Unlike several prior severe weather events this spring and summer, large hail did not seem to be as big of an issue, with only a few reports of hail to the size of quarters.

One of the quarter-sized hail reports actually occurred with a storm that developed near Beloit, Kansas, earlier in the evening around 10:00 PM on August 3. This isolated storm was not associated with the more widespread high-wind event across Nebraska a few hours later. Here are a few of the more noteworthy storm reports received by NWS Hastings as of mid-afternoon, August 4:

  • York County: 77 MPH wind gust measured by a storm spotter in Benedict...large trees down
  • Adams County: 62 MPH wind gust measured at Hastings Municipal Airport
  • Phelps County: 63 MPH wind gust measured at Holdrege Brewster Field...62 MPH wind gust measured by storm spotter near Wilcox

Rainfall Reports:

Although there were a few narrow corridors of rainfall between 0.50 and 1.25 inches, the majority of central and south central Nebraska tallied rainfall well under one-half inch. A few of of the highest totals reported by National Weather Service Cooperative Observers were 1.29 inches (3 miles west of Gresham in York County) and 1.26 inches (Central City).

Several other rainfall totals are listed in the Temperature and Precipitation tables below.
