Cooperative Weather Observers
of South Central Nebraska and North Central Kansas
Supported by the National Weather Service in Hastings Nebraska

The National Weather Service Office in Hastings relies on over one hundred dedicated cooperative observers across South Central Nebraska and North Central Kansas. The observers report daily high and low temperatures, 24 hour rainfall and snowfall, and river readings. The data are used to enhance to nation's climate database and aid in forecasts and warnings. Mike Moritz, lead forecaster at Hastings, prepares to take a river reading from a wire-weight gage. The bar Mike is reaching through is one of the newly installed wire-weight bridge extensions.
