The Weather Coder :

Web Xmitted Cooperative Observer Data Encoded Report

What is WXCODER?

WXCODER is a system developed by the National Weather Service that
enables Cooperative Weather Observers to send weather observations to
the National Weather Service on a web-based form. WXCODER is another
option for Cooperative Weather Observers to send weather observations.
It will not replace ROSA, but is an alternative way of sending coop
observations. There are many advantages of using WXCODER.

1 - Data errors should decrease with it's use because WXCODER has many
quality control checks. There are "Help" messages with every parameter
to aid Observers in sending correct data.

2 - Because WXCODER is very easy to use, time is saved in training Coop
Observers.

3 - Time is also saved by NWS persons in maintaining this Coop data
collection system, i.e., program changes require a change at only one
location....on the CRH Server; no more ROSA phones to maintain, or
constant attention to ROSA PC Programs in order to keep up with rapidly
changing computer technology. The database of WXCODER observers will be
easily maintained and at the WFO level rather than at CRH. Changes can
be made by the WFO immediately and easily...no more waiting periods of
up to a month for the Coop Station to be entered into the CR ROSA
Database.

One of the most important sources of weather data to the National
Weather Service is provided by the dedicated observers we call COOP's,
or Cooperative Observers. These individuals record temperatures and
precipitation data on a daily basis and relay the data to the National
Weather Service office in Springfield using various means, from
computers to programmable phones, ROSA pads, and telephone. Other
data, such as lake elevations, wire weight readings, and evaporation
data is provided as well.

Large quantities of accurate data are required to produce a forecast
that is representative across the southwest portion of the state, where
topography plays a very important role in the decision making of a good
forecast. The more data we receive, the better forecast.

To make the relaying of this data to the National Weather Service
offices easier, the Weather Forecast office in Chicago has designed a
program called WXCODER, or Web Xmitted Cooperative Data Encoded
Report. The program, which is supported by the Central Region
Headquarters in Kansas City, will be made available for use by all
Cooperative Observers throughout the midsection of the country.

To utilize this program, all that is required is a computer with
Internet access. If you are a Cooperative Observer, and wish to use
this program, call your National Weather Service Office in Goodland,
KS. Instructions for use will be provided by your Cooperative Program
Managers.
